Ideal Body Weight

Wednesday, November 12, 2003

Vincent Iannelli of About.com says in his article:
There are a lot of different ways to think about a person's ideal body weight. Some people would consider it to be the weight that was directly proportional to a person's height, so that you wouldn't have people who are short and fat or tall and thin...

M.D.A 'better' way to think about a person's ideal body weight is as what is a 'healthy' weight for their age and height using their body mass index.

I was intrigued to try Ideal Body Weight Calculator and this is the result I got:
An adult who is 145 pounds and is 5 feet 5 inches tall has a body mass index of 24.2.

That's great! An adult with a body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered to have a healthy bmi and so you are likely already at your ideal body weight.

I'ts unfortunate that my bmi is .8 away to overweight. Depression and stress are not valid reasons to keep gaining weight now that my bathroom scale is giving unwelcomed figures...

For adults, a body mass index (bmi):
  • over 30 is considered obese.
  • between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight.
  • between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy bmi.
  • under 18.5 is consider underweight.

To get your bmi, click here to try Ideal Body Weight Calculator... good luck!
