After the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) declaration that commercial deployment of the popular wireless networking protocol was still "illegal" in certain regions in the country, including Metro Manila, Philippine providers of wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) (known formally as the 802.11b standard) services seem unperturbed and await until July 17 on its public hearing. Current NTC regulations prohibit the use of the spread spectrum technology, which includes Wi-Fi, within the 2.4-gigahertz frequency band as this frequency is used by the power utility firm Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) for internal communications.

Last week, as far as the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) was concerned, commercial wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) and bluetooth services, were still "illegal" in certain regions in the Philippines, including Metro Manila.
