God's Word & National Renewal

Sunday, January 29, 2006

Mother and I arrived few minutes late for the one and only 7 a.m. Sunday mass held in Sto. Niño Chapel near where we live.

Today is the fourth Sunday in ordinary time and today's homily is about Who is God and who are the Christians, in celebration of the Bible Week. FR. Rocco Viviano, an Italian Xaverian priest, said the mass in Tagalog using Sambuhay's missalette: Ang Salita Ng Diyos at Pambansang Pagbabago (God's Word and National Renewal). FR. Viviano explained the two structures of the Holy Mass: the Liturgy of the Word (Scripture readings) and Liturgy of the Eucharist (begins when bread and wine are brought to the altar), and how God communicates to us.

The regular Holy Mass has the following structure:

  1. Introductory rites
  2. The Liturgy of the Word
  3. The Liturgy of the Eucharist
  4. The Communion rite
  5. Concluding rite

Today's LITURGY OF THE WORD:

  • First Reading (Dt 18:15-20) (Sit): In Israel no one was like Moses, prophet and lawgiver. But Moses himself declares that God will raise a prophet not only like him but even greater. His prophecy finds fulfillment in Jesus.
  • Second Reading (1 Cor 7:32-35): Paul gives some concrete ways of serving Jesus. While he places no restrictions, Paul believes that unmarried Christians like him can devote themselves entirely to the Lord.

I lighted 3 candles again today. And, I thanked those who prayed for my youngest sister, Beh, who left on Monday for employment abroad.
